Instructor: Michelle McGowan, Special Education Advocate

Michelle is a dedicated Special Education Advocate with over 20 years of experience supporting students with disabilities, including Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, Emotional Disturbance, and Intellectual Impairment. She is also involved in the District Attorney’s Juvenile Diversion Initiative, where she works to keep youth diploma-bound, collaborates with schools to overturn expulsions, and empowers parents to understand their children’s educational rights.

Description: Behavioral challenges can have significant educational consequences if families are not aware of their rights. This workshop explores Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBAs), Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs), discipline protections under IDEA, Manifestation Determination Reviews (MDRs), and what parents should know about suspensions and removals. Practical de-escalation strategies for home will also be discussed.
