Guest Instructor: Geneva Shaw, MSW is a Lecturer and social work professional with over a decade of experience serving Tribal communities in Humboldt and Del Norte Counties. A member of the Hoopa Valley Tribe and of Karuk, Yurok, and Apache descent, her work focuses on ICWA, historical trauma, and culturally responsive practices that support Indigenous children and families.
Description: This workshop provides an overview of the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA), including its historical context, federal and California state requirements, and the ongoing impacts of historical trauma on Native American families and communities.
Participants will gain an understanding of the rights of children covered under ICWA, the importance of preserving tribal identity, and the role caregivers play in supporting culturally appropriate, child-centered practices. The training emphasizes respect for Native American history, culture, tribal membership, and maintaining connections to tribal communities and traditions to promote healing and resilience for Indigenous children in care.
