Please Join Us! 4th Annual Super Saturday Training 

Sponsored by the Foster, Adoptive and Kinship Care Education Program at Grossmont College & the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency, you are invited to attend our 4th Annual Super Saturday Training.

This exclusive FREE one-day training event will provide resource parent participants (including kinship & adoptive) the opportunity to earn 8 hours of training that meet annual training hours needed for Foster Home Licensing.

Various workshops will be offered in three breakout sessions. Participants will have the opportunity to select the training workshops of their choice on a first come – first served bases. Participants at Super Saturday will be treated to a complimentary continental breakfast, served lunch during the keynote speaker’s presentation, and afternoon snacks and giveaways at each session.

* Please note, lunch will only be provided for all-day attendees.

Registration is mandatory for this exclusive event. Space is limited with priority given to County Foster Adoptive and Kinship Parents who plan to attend the entire day. Please review the workshops on the following page. Once you have made your selections, please register online. Registration will open in April and will close at 5pm on Thursday, June 1st, 2017. Register early to secure your spot!

Breakout Session 1

Creating Nurturing and Affirming Homes for Exceptional Youth: In this training, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the experiences, the unique risks and needs of LGBTQ+ youth in care.  The good news is that these risks can be mitigated by foster and adoptive families who are willing to nurture and protect the health, safety, and well-being of these young people.  Attendees will discover specific actions to create a welcoming home for all youth in care and to promote youth’s health and well-being in the community as well as LGBTQ+ resources in the community. 

Martian Child: In this workshop, participants will watch the movie the Martian Child, a film about a science-fiction writer, recently widowed, considers whether to adopt a hyper-imaginative 6-year-old abandoned and socially rejected boy who says he’s really from Mars. Participants will join in a discussion about trauma and how resource parents can help children heal. (Free copy of DVD)

Overview of Attachment: Learn why parenting to enhance attachment with children is critical. An overview of the 18 hour Attachment Parenting class that has been helping resource parents for over 15 years. 

* La Explotación Sexual Comercial de Niños: El entrenamiento revelará la dinámica psicológica que lleva al maltrato y victimización de los niños por los traficantes sexuales. Se profundizará completamente sobre el trauma complejo del abuso y negligencia que deja a los niños vulnerables a los trucos, trampas y atracciones de un traficante.

Breakout Session 2

Connection before Correction: In this workshop we will explain what it means to implement loving limits for children who, due to their traumatic histories, live in a perpetual state of fear. We will explore how to implement these limits in a way that builds connection, offers safety, and establishes the parent as the safe base.

Internet Safety: In this workshop, you will receive tips and tricks to guard your children and students against cyberbullying, hacking and scams, and predators. You will also learn best practices for children as they navigate social networks and live their online lives.

Youth Panel: Each foster child has their own experience and unique story.  Come hear stories from a group of former foster youth and gain their insight of what caregivers did that was helpful and things that could have been done better.

* Disciplina Positiva: Aplicar diferentes técnicas de Disciplina Positiva-como tiempo fuera e intervenciones que pueden aplicar en su habilidad de disciplinar a sus hijos de crianza. 

Breakout Session 3

Internet Safety: In this workshop, you will receive tips and tricks to guard your children and students against cyberbullying, hacking and scams, and predators. You will also learn best practices for children as they navigate social networks and live their online lives.

Positive Discipline:  In this workshop participants will learn effective parenting strategies that take into consideration the child’s trauma experience. Participants will learn the importance of utilizing positive, respectful parenting strategies and how they impact a child’s response and behavior.

Life Books: This workshop will help participants develop skills to assist their foster child in understanding their own life story utilizing the 3-5-7 model and a Lifebook. Participants will also learn about permanency and the effects on youth in the foster care system who do not gain permanency, the grief cycle and how each stage relates to a child in your care, plus so much more.

* Comprendiendo los Libros de Vida: Los padres de recursos entenderán la importancia de los libros de vida usando el modelo 3/5/7 para ayudarle a sus hijos a entender las experiencias de su vida y como apoyarlos con el dolor y la pérdida de su familia biológica.
