Description: It is our responsibility to understand that caring for children who have endured traumas in early childhood (and some worst case imaginable) including in utero and the experience of toxic stress, impacts a child’s neurodevelopment. This impact can effect intellectual functioning, reading ability, social skills, memory, attention, focusing skills, and sensory processing; and can often times impact the child lifelong. Having a better understanding of brain development and the impact early trauma and toxic stress can have on the brain and body can serve a great purpose on how we care for children from foster care, as well as how families are supported to provide nurturing and trauma informed care to the children in their care.
