Knowing that foster children have experienced some form of abuse, neglect, and trauma, successful foster parents often find themselves parenting foster children in a little different manner than they reared their own children, but they teach the same values, attitudes, and behaviors with a more realistic and flexible approach. Successful foster parents learn to build a tolerance for ambivalent feelings and learn to adjust their expectations accordingly. They also learn to have empathy for a child and his/her birth parents’ situation that caused for them to need a safe and nurturing environment away from home.

Successful foster parents also learn the importance of working collaboratively with everyone, especially with the children. By working together as a team, more can be accomplished and more trust can be gained. This class will explore a variety of issues that resource parents face. The presenters will share personal insights and tips that can help participants in their resource parenting journey.
