Americans today live with moderate to high levels of stress, and struggle in their efforts to manage that stress. 1 in 5 Americans believe to be in poor health, and those adults who rate their health as poor report higher levels of stress. Not only does stress affect your body physically it has major effects on the emotional and physical well-being of your family.

The majority of parents don’t believe their children are strongly affected by stress but children report otherwise. Children who have witnessed traumatic events – such as domestic violence, shootings or even fighting – can develop traumatic stress that in time impact their physical and emotional health that if not intervened in a timely manner it can turn into toxic stress.

The presence of a caring adult protects and “buffers” children from toxic stress by helping to lower their elevated hormone levels. Reduced levels of hormones, in turn, reduce the impact of trauma, especially if the trauma is sustained for an extended period of time. Conversely, the lack of a secure relationship under similar circumstances can lead to severe stress response and toxic stress. You have the power to physically change the development of their brains and help them heal and thrive!
